‘Ancient and Contemporary. Rethinking the Navelli Archeological Park Mura Rotte

‘Antico e Contemporaneo. Ripensare il Parco archeologico Mura Rotte di Navelli’

Program Outline and Goals

The main aim of the Summer School is to learn how to design architectural objects within an historical urban context, working by integration and re-functionalization of an historical area.

The program focuses on gaining knowledge of historic architecture’s formal genesis, in its components more structured, in order to understand, interpret and act in the contemporary city. The key concept is the continuity that the organic growth of a place implies: learning from existing condition means to prevent the fragmentation of urban development subjected to individualisms and private interests.

This Summer School aims to provide students by several means of investigations (including the sensory one), the ability to recognize an historic building by multi-level reading in order to re-define an architectural identity and to recognize the potentialities of a place for new life and functions.

The workshop will focus mainly on five specific topics:

  1. History of architecture of the places and the relation between urban settlements and socio-economical milieu;
    1. Free hand drawing and drafting of architecture en plein air, as a very important means to deeply understand the shape of each spatial element;
    2. Photographic survey: documentation and registration of ancient artifacts and comprehension of the relationship between space and time perception;
    3. Landscape and cityscape analysis;
    4. Recognition of the generating idea of an architectural object as a means to understand the whole structure or part of it;
    5. Design proposals and project ideas for the re-use of the Mura Rotte (Broken Walls) urban area;
    6. Summer School follow-up: publication of the design proposals and project ideas.

Important notes

  1. Program participants should be prepared to “walk & explore” during the workshop; make sure you bring the following with you: hat/cup, trekking shoes, backpack, and water bottle.
  2. If you are using any type of medication, please make sure you have them with you.
  3. In the small villages, it is important to approach local citizens with a respectful behavior: at the very beginning, they could be suspicious about what you are doing and because you are foreigners, but usually – once they have understood why you are there – they become very friendly (and will probably offer you at least a good Italian coffee!).
